Event hosted by: School of Visual Arts
Event hosted by: SVA Theatre
As part of After School Special: The 2021 School of Visual Arts Alumni Film & Animation Festival, we are pleased to present a screening of the adult animated film Cryptozoo (2021), followed by a Q&A with the film’s creator-director, SVA alumnus Dash Shaw (BFA 2005 Illustration). The film won awards at both the 2021 Berlinale and Sundance Film Festival. Current SVA student Emily Cabrera (BFA 2022 Animation) will moderate the Q&A.
Synopsis: Cryptozookeepers try to capture a Baku, a dream-eating hybrid creature of legend, and start wondering if they should display these beasts or keep them hidden and unknown. Featuring the voices of Lake Bell and Michael Cera.
Cryptozoo is not rated by the MPAA, and some material may be inappropriate for children under the age of 17. Children ages 12 and under will not be admitted.
Doors will open approximately 30 minutes prior to each screening, and guests can enjoy music videos by Samuel Bayer (BFA 1987 Media Arts) in the lobby while waiting to enter. Bayer, the director behind iconic videos like Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” and Green Day’s “American Idiot”, will be present at select After School Special 2021 screenings for brief Q&As preceding the feature films.
