Join Shonagh Marshall in conversation with Charlie Engman, one of the most exciting individuals working in fashion today.
Charlie Engman, originally from Chicago, began taking pictures whilst studying Japanese and Korean Studies at the University of Oxford. This unconventional route into the space of fashion photography, his photographic practice began as a form of visual notation, frees him from the traditional trappings formerly associated with commerce. In his images all the elements””models, clothing, props and location””come together to provide conceptual and visual solutions to the formal problems of picture making. It is within these constructs and boundaries that his images soar; playfully he creates scenarios, which arise to question the contemporary world around us. Not halting at photography, Charlie recently co-designed a collection of clothing for Collina Strada Resort 2020 and has begun a styling practice collaborating with the likes of Marton Perlaki and Mark Peckmezian.
Engman’s commissioned work has appeared in publications such as AnOther Magazine, Dazed, Garage, POP, T: The New York Times Style Magazine, Unemployed, and American Vogue and has been used by clients such as Prada, Marni, Adidas, Hermès, Kenzo, Nike, Opening Ceremony, Pucci, Sonia Rykiel, Stella McCartney, and Vivienne Westwood. His first monograph MOM is coming out in Spring 2020 published by Edition Patrick Frey, it includes a selection of images from his ongoing project around his Mom that was also displayed in a solo exhibition at Scrap Metal in Toronto.
