Event hosted by: SVA Theatre
As part of After School Special: The 2021 School of Visual Arts Alumni Film & Animation Festival, we are pleased to present a screening of the documentary film Lydia Lunch: The War is Never Over (2019), followed by a Q&A with the film’s director, SVA alumna Beth B (BFA 1976 Fine Arts), and other members of the film’s creative team, including SVA MFA 2016 Social Documentary alumni filmmakers Megan Orr, Prapaporn Pinyopusarerk-Capo, and Sarah Rachael Wainio. Current SVA student Lydia Erickson (MFA 2022 Social Documentary) will moderate the Q&A.
Synopsis: The first career-spanning documentary retrospective of Lydia Lunch’s confrontational, acerbic, and always electric artistry. As New York City’s preeminent No Wave icon from the late 1970’s, Lunch has forged a lifetime of music and spoken word performance devoted to the utter right of any woman to indulge, seek pleasure, and to say “f*ck you!” as loud as any man. In this time of endless attacks on women this is a rallying cry to acknowledge the only thing that is going to bring us together — ART…. as the universal salve to all of our traumas.
Lydia Lunch: The War is Never Over is not rated by the MPAA, and some material may be inappropriate for children under the age of 17. Children ages 12 and under will not be admitted.
Doors will open approximately 30 minutes prior to each screening, and guests can enjoy music videos by Samuel Bayer (BFA 1987 Media Arts) in the lobby while waiting to enter. Bayer, the director behind iconic videos like Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” and Green Day’s “American Idiot”, will be present at select After School Special 2021 screenings for brief Q&As preceding the feature films.
