With over 5,000 employees and a $17 billion 10-year capital plan, the New York City Department of Transportation (NYCDOT) is one of the nation’s largest and most diverse municipal transportation agencies. The agency’s complex and challenging responsibilities include overseeing New York City’s roads, bridges, traffic and lighting operations, as well as parking, passenger ferry service, and bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure.
Since being appointed by Mayor Bill de Blasio in 2014, Commissioner Polly Trottenberg has led and maintained the agency’s strong focus on safety, equity, sustainability, and economic growth , championing New York City’s Visoin Zero initiative to reduce roadway fatalities and injuries, with a focus on redesigning hundreds of city streets. Besides critical efforts to prioritize the expansion of street resurfacing and reconstruction, bridge rehabilitation and construction, and improvement of bus system performance on city streets, Commissioner Trottenberg is also addressing curbside management while building a cycling network of over 1,200 miles and doubling the country’s largest bike-share program.
