As part of After School Special: The 2016 School of Visual Arts Alumni Film & Animation Festival, we are pleased to present a special free screening of the documentary TransFatty Lives (2015), followed by a Q&A with director and subject Patrick O’Brien (BFA 1996 Film and Video) and his collaborator, Timothy Saccenti (1995 Photography).  Preceded by the short films From Light to Dark and A Life in Words and Letters by Benita Raphan (BFA 1984 Media Arts) and The Little Violinist by Yang Wang (MPS 2013 Live Action Short Film).  The Q&A will be moderated by current SVA student Miwa Sakulrat (BFA 2017 Film).
Synopsis: At 30, Patrick O’Brien was TransFatty: a New York City DJ, internet personality, and filmmaker.  Then, he was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease).  Given 2-5 years to live, Patrick braves the unthinkable and turns his camera onto himself.  Forcefully lacking self-pity, he captures the emotion, humor, and absurdity of real life as he makes art, gets political, falls in love, and fathers a son.
TransFatty Lives is not rated by the MPAA, and some material may be inappropriate for children under the age of 13.  Children under the age of 5 will not be admitted.
…. And come early to enjoy virtual reality and music video experiences in the lobby!
