Event hosted by: SVA Theatre
As part of After School Special: The 2021 School of Visual Arts Alumni Film & Animation Festival, we are pleased to present the World Premiere screening of Myroc Productions’ documentary Love Is In the Legend (2021), followed by a Q&A with the film’s director (Myra Lewis) and creative team, including two SVA alumni — editor Yanni Feder (BFA 2002 Film and Video) and one of the film’s subjects, photographer Tina Paul (BFA 1982 Photography), whose archival photography is featured in the film. Current SVA student Rebecca Steighner (BFA 2023 Photography and Video) will moderate the Q&A.
Synopsis: Love is in the Legend is a New York 1980’s underground story of uniquely diverse and multicultural outsiders, told from the perspective of an insider with a shared history. They found belonging through fashion, dance, and music in the confluence of the Paradise Garage club, the Harlem ball scene, and the formation of the House of Field. As the missing link in how voguing was introduced to popular culture, the House of Field Ball of September 1988 stands in the timeline as a historic event inspired by love and community. By bringing together the worlds of Seventh Avenue fashion, downtown club culture, and the Harlem Houses, it was the ball that changed it all.
Love Is In the Legend is not rated by the MPAA, and some material may be inappropriate for children under the age of 13. Children ages 12 and under will not be admitted.
Doors will open approximately 30 minutes prior to each screening, and guests can enjoy music videos by Samuel Bayer (BFA 1987 Media Arts) in the lobby while waiting to enter. Bayer, the director behind iconic videos like Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” and Green Day’s “American Idiot”, will be present at select After School Special 2021 screenings for brief Q&As preceding the feature films.
