As part of After School Special: The 2021 School of Visual Arts Alumni Film & Animation Festival, we are pleased to present a screening of In the Heights (2021), followed by a Q&A with several of the film’s visual effects artists, all graduates of SVA’s BFA Computer Art, Computer Animation and Visual Effects program:  Martin Boksar, Nickolas Crist, Min Hwa Jung, Esther Song, and Amanda Sparso.  Current SVA student Cindy Mora Hernandez (BFA 2022 Computer Art, Computer Animation and Visual Effects) will moderate the Q&A.

Synopsis: A film version of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Tony Award-winning Broadway musical in which Usnavi, a sympathetic Washington Heights bodega owner, saves every penny every day as he imagines and sings about a better life.

In the Heights is rated PG-13, and some material may be inappropriate for children under the age of 13.  Children are welcome, but those under the age of 5 may not be admitted.  Please see our COVID protocols for guests (linked below) for more information.

Doors will open approximately 30 minutes prior to each screening, and guests can enjoy music videos by Samuel Bayer (BFA 1987 Media Arts) in the lobby while waiting to enter. Bayer, the director behind iconic videos like Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” and Green Day’s “American Idiot”, will be present at select After School Special 2021 screenings for brief Q&As preceding the feature films.
