One Ring Circus: On Collecting Unlikely Photographs

BFA Photography and Video, in conjunction with Swann Auction Galleries and the International Center for Photography’s exhibition, “Hunt’s Three Ring Circus: American Groups Before 1950,” presents a panel discussion between collectors W.M. Hunt, Daile Kaplan and Josh Sapan.
W.M. Hunt is a collector, curator and consultant whose exhibition, “Hunt’s Three Ring Circus: American Groups Before 1950,” is currently being presented in conjunction with the International Center for Photography at the 1285 Avenue of the Americas Gallery through January 2016. His book, The Unseen Eye: Photographs from the Unconscious (Aperture), was published in 2011.
Daile Kaplan is Photographs Specialist on PBS’ Antiques Roadshow and vice president and director of photographs at Swann Auction Galleries. Her collection of three-dimensional decorative and functional objects embellished with photographs, which she named “pop photographica,” has been exhibited at the Museum of Art and Design, the Morgan Museum and Library, the Art Gallery of Ontario and the Les Rencontres d’Arles, in France.
Josh Sapan is the President and CEO of AMC Networks, the company that operates the cable channels AMC, BBC AMERICA, IFC, WE tv and SundanceTV. The channels, movies, documentaries and series created under his guidance have won multiple awards including Emmys, Golden Globes, Oscars and Peabodys. Sapan serves on the board of trustees of People For The American Way and the Museum of the Moving Image. He is a highly idiosyncratic collector and his photography book, The Big Picture: America in Panorama, with an introduction by Luc Sante, was published by Princeton Architectural Press in 2013.
